Islamabad: The Senate on Sunday passed the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill 2023 after the government removed the warrantless arrest provision from the bill.
The government also withdrew the Antiterrorism Amendment Bill 2023
The upper house session was presided over by Speaker Sadiq Sanjrani.
Justice Minister Nazir Tarar submitted the Official Secrets Amendment Bill 2023 to the Senate for approval.
Commenting on the amendments, Tarar said that the law strengthens the powers of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the FIA Director General.
He further explained that objections were raised on two points that have now been resolved; the provision allowing authorities to make arrests without warrants has been withdrawn.
He also said that the objectionable wording of the bill had been amended.
