In a historic triumph for Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios, the 23-year-old beauty queen, secured the coveted title of Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition of the pageant held in El Salvador on Saturday. This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time a contestant from Nicaragua has clinched the prestigious Miss Universe title.
Palacios, radiating humility and gratitude for life’s small joys, was crowned Miss Universe 2023 and received the esteemed crown and sash from her predecessor, R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States.
The week-long competition, featuring segments such as evening gown, swimsuit, and national dress, saw Palacios outshine 84 contestants from around the globe. The runners-up in the competition were Thailand’s Anntonia Porsild and Australia’s Moraya Wilson, who secured the second and third positions, respectively.
During the final question posed by the judges, Palacios advocated for gender equality, emphasizing the importance of equal pay regardless of gender. She expressed her belief in women having the opportunity to “work in any area,” boldly stating, “There is no limit for women.”
The grand stage for this historic event was set in the newly renovated Adolfo Pineda National Gymnasium in the capital, San Salvador. The gala, attended by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, was not only a celebration of beauty and grace but also brought the exciting announcement that the next edition of Miss Universe will be hosted in Mexico.
Sheynnis Palacios’ win is a momentous occasion for Nicaragua and a testament to the pageant’s evolving commitment to promoting diversity, empowerment, and the breaking of barriers in the world of beauty.
