Sindh Govt Orders Officials to Pay Own E-Challan Fines Amid Traffic Violations

KARACHI: The Sindh government has instructed all government officials to pay traffic e-challan fines from their personal funds after noting a significant increase in violations by staff using government vehicles.

Since the launch of the e-challan system in Karachi, multiple government vehicles have been cited for offences such as running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, unfastened seatbelts, and tinted windows. The notices for these violations were previously being received at the respective offices.

An official order issued on Saturday directed all administrative departments, including senior members of the Board of Revenue, Enquiries & Anti-Corruption Establishment, Planning & Development Board, Sindh Public Service Commission, Sindh Service Tribunal, and all commissioners across the province, to ensure strict compliance.

The circular stated: “All officers and officials using allotted government vehicles shall pay e-challans from their own pockets. Administrative departments and commissioner offices are requested to ensure strict compliance of this policy directive.”

In a parallel traffic safety measure, speed-limit signboards have been installed along Sharea Faisal, Karachi’s largest thoroughfare. DSP (Admin) Kashif Nadeem confirmed that the speed limit has been set at 60 km/h for cars, jeeps, and motorcycles, while buses and trucks are restricted to 30 km/h. Vehicles exceeding these limits will now receive automated challans through traffic cameras.
