Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi elected as PCB Chairman

LAHORE: Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi was on Tuesday elected unanimously and unopposed as the Pakistan Cricket Board’s chairman for a three-year term.

PCB’s Chief Election Commissioner Shah Khawar had summoned a special meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) on Tuesday at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, the PCB said in a press release.

Addressing the BoG following his election, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi said: “I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been unanimously elected as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. I am thankful for the trust and confidence reposed in me.

“I am fully committed to upgrading the standard of the game in the country and bringing professionalism in the administration of cricket in Pakistan.”

Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi is currently the caretaker chief minister of Punjab.

Shah Khawar said at a press conference that Naqvi is the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board from Tuesday and will assume charge in a few days.

Naqvi is the 37th chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. He replaced former PCB Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf in the Board of Governors.

“Mohsin Naqvi can take up the role of chairman along with his chief minister position. There is no restriction in the law and constitution that might restrict him from becoming the chairman immediately,” said Khawar.

He said that the cricket body has constituted a board in accordance with the constitution. “There will be good decisions and work in the upcoming events,” added the chief election commissioner.

Naqvi — a media channel owner who has been serving as the interim chief minister for a year — was nominated by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar for the Pakistan Cricket Board BoG.

The Board of Governors, who attended the special meeting, included Mustafa Ramday (PCB Patron’s nominee), Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi (PCB Patron’s nominee), Sajjad Ali Khokhar (President Regional Cricket Association AJK), Zafarullah Jadgal (President Regional Cricket Association Dera Murad Jamali), Tanveer Ahmed, President Regional Cricket Association Larkana), Tariq Sarwar (President Regional Cricket Association Bahawalpur), Muhammad Ismail Qureshi (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited), Dr Anwaar Ahmad Khan (Ghani Glass Limited), Javed Iqbal (State Bank of Pakistan), Osama Azhar (Pakistan Television), Nadeem Irshad Kayani (Secretary to the Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination – Non-voting member).
