Trump lauds PM Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir for leadership during Pakistan-India conflict

US president recalls role in halting war, cites use of trade and tariffs to prevent escalation

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, for their leadership during the recent Pakistan–India conflict.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Board of Peace, Trump said, “I like Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif a lot,” and recalled developing close ties with the premier during the crisis.

He also commended the army chief, saying, “Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has great personality and is a great general.”

Reflecting on the conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours, Trump claimed the United States played a critical role in preventing escalation. “We played our role to stop war between Pakistan and India,” he said. He added that he leveraged trade measures, warning Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that heavy tariffs would be imposed if hostilities continued.

The US president further noted that “eleven planes were shot down” during the conflict, highlighting the intensity of the military engagement.

Trump’s remarks come amid the launch of his Board of Peace initiative, aimed at conflict resolution and reconstruction efforts in war-affected regions globally.
