Mianwali: At least two policemen were injured on Monday when a group of 12 to 14 terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the Qabool Khel Mianwali police check post in Punjab.
According to a police spokesperson, the attackers used rockets and hand grenades to target the Mianwali Police check post. Despite the intense attack, the Punjab Police successfully repelled the terrorists, who eventually fled the scene. The spokesperson confirmed that two police officers sustained injuries in the confrontation.
Following the attack, Deputy Superintendent of Police Isa Khel, along with additional personnel, arrived at the check post to assess the situation and bolster security.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar attack last month in Rahim Yar Khan, where bandits ambushed police vans with rockets, resulting in the martyrdom of 12 policemen and injuries to six others. The attack occurred in the Machka area, where two police vans, trapped in rainwater, were targeted. The assault led to severe casualties, with several officers missing.
The recent surge in militant attacks in Pakistan, particularly since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, has intensified concerns. While Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen the majority of these attacks, regions such as Balochistan have also been affected. Last year alone, Balochistan experienced 170 militant attacks, resulting in the deaths of 151 civilians and 114 security personnel, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
Amid rising tensions and ongoing violence, Islamabad has accused the Afghan government of inadequately addressing militant groups operating from its territory. In response, the federal cabinet approved Operation Azm-e-Istehkam in June, a renewed national counter-terrorism initiative designed to address and eliminate terrorism, based on recommendations from the Central Apex Committee under the National Action Plan.
