UN Chief Condemns Deadly Kashmir Attack, Urges Protection of Civilians

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the deadly armed attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir that claimed the lives of at least 28 people on Tuesday.

According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in the attack, which reportedly took place near the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam. A gunman is said to have opened fire on a group of people, killing over two dozen and leaving many others injured.

“Guterres extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” said Dujarric during a press briefing. He reiterated that “attacks against civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances.”

When asked if the Secretary-General was concerned that the incident might escalate tensions in the region or lead to cross-border conflict, Dujarric declined to speculate. “We’re not going to predict or analyze what may happen,” he said. “I think we’re just looking at that incident, that horrific terror attack in which more than 20 people were killed, which we strongly condemn.”

Dujarric emphasized the UN’s consistent stance on the protection of civilian lives and the need for restraint in regions affected by violence.
