Islamabad: Muhammad Ali, the Interim Energy Minister and Power Minister, stated on Tuesday that electricity rates will remain unchanged until there is a decrease in petrol and dollar prices.
Ali mentioned, “It is challenging to lower electricity rates until there is a decline in petrol and dollar prices.” He added that the caretaker government is working diligently to address the situation.
The government has also taken a firm stance against defaulters and those engaged in power theft, as decided during a meeting chaired by Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to assess the power sector.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister received a comprehensive briefing on various aspects of the power sector, including total electricity generation capacity, installed capacity, actual generation, and power distribution across different weather conditions.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for swift action against electricity dues defaulters, in collaboration with provinces and law enforcement agencies, stating that no concessions would be granted to defaulters and power thieves.
Furthermore, Kakar highlighted the significance of developing plans for small hydel projects with expert guidance. He pointed out that these projects could not only generate affordable electricity but also play a role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
