Russian billionaire’s superyacht transits Strait of Hormuz amid tensions

Vessel passes without objection from Iran or US despite restricted maritime traffic

A superyacht owned by Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz after maintenance in Dubai, with neither Iran nor the United States objecting to its passage, a source said.

The vessel, named Nord and valued at over $500 million, sailed under a Russian flag through the strategically vital waterway on Saturday, following an approved route in line with international maritime law.

According to the source, Iranian authorities did not interfere as the yacht was considered a civilian vessel from a friendly country undertaking peaceful transit. The United States also raised no concerns, noting the yacht had no links to Iran and did not call at Iranian ports.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — a key global النفط shipping route — has been significantly reduced since the outbreak of conflict between Washington and Tehran, with only a limited number of mainly commercial vessels currently passing each day compared to pre-conflict levels.

The passage comes amid an uneasy ceasefire between the two sides, with maritime movement still tightly controlled and the US maintaining a blockade of Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg following regional consultations.

Tracking data indicated the yacht was last located near the coast of Oman after crossing the strait.
