ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday met former Senegalese president and candidate for the position of United Nations secretary-general Macky Sall, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and the central role of the UN in addressing global challenges.
During the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House, PM Shehbaz welcomed Macky Sall and reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding support for the United Nations, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The prime minister expressed hope that the future leadership of the UN would effectively advance the organisation’s three key pillars — international peace and security, development, and human rights — in a balanced and effective manner.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions in letter and spirit, and respect for international law and treaties to promote global peace, stability and prosperity.
He emphasised that stronger international cooperation was essential to address emerging global challenges and ensure sustainable development.
Macky Sall acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations and appreciated the country’s constructive role in promoting international peace and multilateral cooperation.
The meeting took place as potential candidates for the next UN secretary-general continue diplomatic engagements ahead of the selection process for the organisation’s top position.
