KARACHI: A 2.9-magnitude earthquake was felt in different parts of Karachi on Friday evening, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The Met Office said the earthquake struck at 6:01pm, with its epicentre located within Karachi. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.
No casualties or property damage were reported immediately after the tremors.
Pakistan frequently experiences seismic activity due to its location along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The movement of the Indian plate towards the Eurasian plate makes large parts of South Asia vulnerable to earthquakes.
The country has witnessed several major earthquakes in recent decades. In February this year, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake was felt in Islamabad, Swat and Hunza.
One of Pakistan’s deadliest earthquakes struck Azad Jammu and Kashmir in 2005, killing more than 73,000 people and leaving millions homeless.
Balochistan also faced a major earthquake in 2021 when tremors in Harnai claimed at least 20 lives, while landslides created additional challenges for rescue operations.
Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stronger preparedness measures, particularly in earthquake-prone regions where difficult terrain can make emergency response and relief operations more challenging.
