TEHRAN: Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Tehran shortly after arriving in the Iranian capital.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Munir’s visit is focused on promoting efforts for a peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution of the conflict in the Middle East.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with Washington preparing new sanctions targeting Iran and its trade partners.
Pakistan has been maintaining contacts with both Tehran and Washington as part of its efforts to promote dialogue and regional peace.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei had earlier said Field Marshal Munir would lead an official delegation to Tehran to strengthen bilateral cooperation and support peace and security in the region.
The visit also follows a reported phone call between Field Marshal Munir and US President Donald Trump last week. According to Pakistani sources cited by Reuters, Trump urged Pakistan to use its influence to encourage Iran to return to negotiations.
Discussions in Tehran are expected to cover the stalled US-Iran peace process, regional security and developments affecting the Middle East.
Further meetings between the Pakistani delegation and senior Iranian officials are expected during the visit.
Pakistan has been playing a mediatory role between Iran and the United States, with Islamabad previously hosting direct talks between the two sides and supporting efforts towards a permanent resolution of the conflict.
The visit comes as tensions have again intensified, with Iran warning of retaliation against measures it considers hostile and the United States preparing additional sanctions against Tehran.
Field Marshal Munir and Mohsin Naqvi have made several visits to Iran in recent months as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and promoting a peaceful settlement.
