Islamabad: In a recent meeting chaired by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, the federal cabinet made significant decisions on key appointments and addressed pressing international issues.
National Accountability Bureau Appointments
The cabinet endorsed the appointment of Sahil Naseer, a former judge of the Lahore High Court, as the Deputy Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Additionally, Syed Ihtesham Qadir Shah was approved as the NAB Prosecutor General, ushering in a new leadership era for the anti-corruption institution.
International Solidarity with Gaza
Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi emphasized the cabinet’s strong condemnation of recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The cabinet called for an immediate cessation of these actions and advocated for the resolution of the Palestinian issue in accordance with United Nations resolutions. The cabinet also stressed the importance of ending the blockade of the Gaza Strip and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Pakistan expressed its commitment to actively participate in international efforts regarding the situation in Gaza.
Pakistan-China Relations
As a gesture to strengthen Pakistan-China relations, Brigadier Shahid Aamir was authorized to receive a medal on behalf of China, reflecting the countries’ continued friendship and cooperation.
Financial Advisory Services for PIA
The cabinet granted approval to acquire the services of a Consortium for financial advisory services for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Privatisation Minister Fawad Hasan highlighted the significant financial losses suffered by PIA, with monthly losses amounting to Rs12.77 billion and total losses of Rs750 billion. He assured that no PIA employees would face unemployment during the privatisation process, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the workforce.
Economic Coordination Committee Decisions
The cabinet ratified the decisions made during the Economic Coordination Committee meeting on October 3, 2023, demonstrating the government’s commitment to economic stability and progress.
Status of Afghan Citizens in Pakistan
Murtaza Solangi clarified that no actions were being taken against Afghan citizens who have been living in Pakistan for the past 40 years, provided they possess valid Proof of Registration (PoR) cards. However, for illegal foreign residents without visas or legal documents, a voluntary repatriation deadline was set for October 31, 2023. This move aims to address the situation of undocumented individuals and facilitate their return to their home countries. The government noted that a significant number of such individuals have already initiated the repatriation process.
