Defence Day: Army Chief warns against turning political differences into Hatred

On Defence Day, Army Chief General Asim Munir has emphasized the importance of unity in the face of political differences, warning that turning disagreements into hatred could weaken national harmony. He vowed that the nation will not allow “nefarious objectives” aimed at undermining unity to succeed.

General Munir made these remarks while addressing the Defence Day ceremony at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Friday. The ceremony honored the sacrifices of those who gave their lives defending Pakistan during the 1965 war.

During his speech, the Army Chief highlighted the vital connection between the military and the nation, describing it as a bond of the heart. “The nation has always backed the army, whether during natural disasters, foreign hostilities, or the fight against terrorism,” he said. This relationship, he noted, is key to ensuring the defeat of the country’s enemies.

General Munir also spoke about the recently launched Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, clarifying that it is not a new initiative but part of the National Action Plan (NAP), aimed at eradicating terrorism and extremism from Pakistan. He assured the public that the new operation would not involve the displacement of civilians and reaffirmed the commitment to eliminating the last terrorist from Pakistan’s soil.

He praised the sacrifices made by the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and the people of Pakistan, particularly those from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, calling their contributions a golden chapter in the nation’s history. The COAS also highlighted the success of initiatives like Paigham-e-Pakistan, better border management, and development projects in KP and Balochistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the ceremony, acknowledging the sacrifices of the martyrs and emphasizing the importance of national unity in the face of external threats. He highlighted Pakistan’s peaceful intentions, noting that the country has consistently played a positive role in regional stability. However, he stressed that Pakistan will not compromise on its freedom, honor, or national interests.

The ceremony, attended by federal ministers, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and other dignitaries, served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s heroes and the ongoing commitment to the nation’s security and development.
