Karachi: A doctor was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Sharea Faisal late Monday night, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Dr Sarang Memon, a resident near the Karachi Press Club and originally from Badin. Police said his body has been shifted to his native town for burial.
According to the Deputy Inspector General South, the doctor was travelling with his wife in a rickshaw when unknown assailants in a car began chasing them.
Police said Dr Memon sustained four bullet wounds to the chest and legs during the attack, with the chest injury proving fatal.
At the time of the incident, he was returning home from Cantt Station with his wife. Following the attack, his wife immediately transported him to the hospital in the same rickshaw.
Dr Memon was serving at a private hospital in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Police said a case would be registered after the burial on the complaint of the family.
Authorities also shared background details, stating that one of his brothers, an MBBS student, had died by drowning in Jamshoro, while another brother was reportedly shot dead in Badin during unrest following the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR at the Artillery Maidan Police Station on the complaint of his brother, Sarmad Hussain.
According to the FIR, Dr Sarang and his wife were travelling in an auto-rickshaw when armed men intercepted them. An assailant stepped out of the car and asked the doctor to get down, after which he opened fire.
His wife rushed him to Jinnah Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, the FIR stated.
