Gmail rolls out new AI features to act as personal assistant

Tools include email writing help, inbox summaries and daily to-do lists for users

CALIFORNIA: Google has announced the rollout of new AI-powered features in Gmail aimed at turning users’ inboxes into a personal assistant, enhancing email writing, organisation and productivity.

According to Google, the new tools will help users write emails, summarise important information hidden in their inboxes and generate a daily to-do list. The updates mark a major step for Gmail nearly 22 years after the platform transformed email communication.

Initially, the AI features will be available only to users in the United States and in English, with plans to expand to other countries and languages later this year.

The main feature, “Help Me Write,” learns a user’s writing style to generate personalised email drafts and quick suggestions. For Pro and Ultra subscribers, Gmail will also offer a chat-style search experience, allowing users to ask questions directly in the search bar and receive instant AI-generated answers.

Another upcoming feature, AI Inbox, will be rolled out to selected US users and will analyse inbox content to suggest tasks and priorities.

Google Vice President of Product Blake Barnes said the new features are designed to ensure Gmail is “always there for you.”

All the tools are powered by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3, which was launched last year and has already been integrated into Google Search.
