HWPL Hosts Global Dialogue on Solutions-Oriented Journalism

An international workshop on peace journalism brought together around 220 journalists from across the world to discuss the evolving role of media in addressing conflict and rebuilding audience trust.

The online event, titled “Reporting Solutions in the Age of News Avoidance,” was organised by HWPL on April 18, focusing on strengthening audience engagement through constructive and solutions-oriented journalism.

The workshop featured contributions from journalists who presented research emphasising the need to move beyond traditional reporting and highlight pathways for peace and conflict resolution.

Achmad Yani from Indepthnews.id discussed how international media narratives influence public perception, citing analysis that showed most coverage of the Thailand–Cambodia conflict focused on military and political developments, with limited attention to displaced civilians.

He stressed the importance of incorporating victim-centred perspectives and promoting narratives that support de-escalation.

Ida Yusnita highlighted peace as a fundamental human right rooted in justice, equality, and security, calling for collective responsibility among governments, society, and the media.

She emphasised the need for responsible journalism, tolerance education, and stronger independent media to support peaceful societies.

Meanwhile, José Nicolás Arroyo Ramos explored how modern media environments can fuel polarisation, introducing the concept of “discursive violence,” where communication intensifies divisions without physical conflict.

He advocated for peace journalism that examines root causes, includes diverse viewpoints, and promotes constructive solutions.

Participants also engaged in breakout discussions on the role of positive narratives in conflict reporting and how journalism can inspire hope among audiences.

The workshop introduced the Media Association for Global Peace, a global platform aimed at connecting journalists and organisations to advance peace journalism practices worldwide.

Organisers said the event reinforced the idea that media plays a critical role not only in informing the public but also in shaping perceptions and contributing to peacebuilding through responsible reporting.
