Kurram authorities sets up camps for TDPs amid potential anti-terror operation

In response to a deadly ambush on a supply convoy headed for Parachinar in the Kurram district, local authorities have announced the establishment of camps for Temporarily Displaced Persons (TDPs) in the troubled region of Lower Kurram. The district administration revealed this initiative on Friday as law enforcement agencies (LEAs) prepare to launch a counter-terrorism operation.

A notification from the Deputy Commissioner’s office confirmed the forthcoming operations in various parts of Lower Kurram. To ensure the safety and support of the affected residents, camps will be set up at multiple locations, including Government Boys Degree College, Tal, Government Technical College, the under-construction Rescue 1122 compound, and judicial building.

The recent surge in violence has left the region reeling. Since November of last year, over 150 people have died in escalating clashes. The most recent attack occurred on Thursday when a convoy of 35 vehicles delivering essential supplies such as rice, flour, cooking oil, and medicine was ambushed. This assault resulted in eight fatalities, including security personnel, drivers, and civilians. Security forces retaliated, killing six assailants.

Despite numerous peace deals brokered by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and tribal leaders, the violence persists. The latest truce, announced on January 1, was soon followed by another attack on an aid convoy, injuring several officials and their security detail.

The ongoing conflict has severely impacted the delivery of humanitarian aid. In the past two weeks, only two aid consignments have reached Kurram, the latest arriving on January 14. Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the quantity and quality of aid received, while critical services such as helicopter patient transfers have been suspended for over ten days.
