Kylie Jenner Criticized as ‘Climate Criminal’ Amid L.A. wildfires

Kylie Jenner has come under intense scrutiny for her private jet usage, with critics labeling her a “climate criminal” following her recent statement about relief efforts for the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

Reports surfaced that Jenner’s $70 million Bombardier Global 7500 jet has completed 11 flights since January 1, with three flights on a single day, January 16. Data from Celebrity Jets indicates these flights have produced around 162 tons of CO2, a figure equivalent to the annual electricity use of 33 homes, according to the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

Among the controversial flights were four journeys under an hour, including a 15-minute flight between Los Angeles and Camarillo.

The backlash intensified after Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics Instagram account pledged donations of beauty products to assist wildfire victims, stating, “We are truly heartbroken to see the devastation caused by the fires in Los Angeles.” Social media users quickly pointed out the apparent hypocrisy, given her jet’s significant carbon emissions.

Critics, including one who commented, “Taking a private jet to Paris, which contributes to the warmer weather and wildfires in LA, and then putting a bandaid on middle-class LA fire victims with your lotion, is horrific,” have expressed their disapproval of her actions.

The criticism was further fueled when Jenner used her jet for a 47-minute flight from London to Paris to support her boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, at a movie premiere. This usage is seen as particularly tone-deaf as Southern California grapples with catastrophic wildfires that have already claimed 27 lives and scorched 40,000 acres.

Environmental activists and social media users have branded her actions as “performative” and “irresponsible,” with one Reddit user remarking, “They don’t care. Kylie sharing donation links is performative.”

This is not the first time Jenner has faced backlash over her private jet habits. In 2022, she was criticized for a 12-minute flight for a journey that would have taken 39 minutes by car.
