Lahore: A man in Punjab’s Pakpattan city was arrested on Friday for allegedly allowing an offensive post targeting Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to circulate in a WhatsApp group. The arrest was made under the provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca).
According to the First Information Report (FIR), a post containing “dirty language” against CM Maryam was shared in the group. The group admin, who has been identified as the suspect, allegedly failed to remove the offensive content and allowed it to remain visible to group members.
“The suspect deliberately uploaded an immoral, insulting post on the group. The admin, despite being aware of its offensive nature, did not delete it and facilitated its visibility to others,” stated the FIR. The admin was accused of “spreading chaos among the public.”
The FIR was registered under Section 20 of Peca and Section 509 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Pakpattan police have confirmed the arrest and reiterated their commitment to enforcing cybercrime laws. “The group admin has been arrested for sharing an insulting post against CM Maryam Nawaz,” police officials stated.
