WEB DESK: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his two sons but did not identify which son was allegedly targeted or provide details about when or how the purported operation was planned.
Netanyahu made the claim on Monday during a phone interview with military correspondent Noam Amir on Israel’s Channel 14, according to media reports.
Describing the alleged incident as “incredible”, Netanyahu said Iran had targeted one of his sons.
The Israeli prime minister appeared to link the claim to security arrangements for his family, arguing that protection for his sons was necessary rather than a privilege.
The comments came after Israel approved extended security protection for Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, and their sons Yair and Avner.
The decision reportedly allows security measures for the family to continue even beyond a possible end to Netanyahu’s tenure as prime minister.
Netanyahu also said he had spoken with Shin Bet chief David Zini and requested appropriate security arrangements for candidates running for prime minister amid continuing political tensions in Israel.
However, no publicly disclosed evidence has so far been presented detailing an alleged Iranian assassination operation against either of Netanyahu’s sons.
Netanyahu also did not specify whether Yair or Avner was allegedly targeted.
The claim comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with Netanyahu continuing to portray Iran as a major security threat to Israel.
