Pakistan stands in solidarity with people of Bangladesh: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and hoped that they would return to normalcy peacefully and swiftly.

“The government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, sincerely hoping for a peaceful and swift return to normalcy,” the Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement.

She also expressed confidence that the resilient spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people would lead them to a harmonious future, the official news agency reported.

Anti-government protests in Bangladesh — which began as student-led demonstrations against government hiring rules in July — concluded on Monday with the country’s “autocratic” prime minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India and the military announcing it would form an interim government.

At least 300 people were killed in more than a month of deadly protests that ended her rule after 15 years.
