Pakistan Takes Bold Step Towards Addressing Afghan Refugee Issue

Islamabad: Pakistan has taken a decisive step to address the longstanding issue of Afghan refugees within its borders. The government has resolved to initiate the repatriation of Afghan refugees, offering them the opportunity to return to their homeland.

Sources reveal that the interim federal cabinet, through a circulation summary, has given its approval for this important decision. A crucial meeting has been convened for Friday, presided over by the interior secretary, to chart the course for a comprehensive repatriation plan.

Currently, Pakistan is home to an estimated 1.1 million Afghan nationals, many of whom have sought refuge in the country over the years due to various conflicts and instability in Afghanistan. However, with the aim of organizing and addressing national security concerns, the government has made the strategic decision to embark on the repatriation process.

According to reliable sources, Afghan refugees holding Proof of Registration (PoR) cards will not be repatriated under this plan. PoR cards have been a lifeline for countless Afghans, granting them access to essential services and protection within Pakistan. The exclusion of PoR cardholders from repatriation underscores the commitment to the safety and security of those who have been residing in Pakistan for an extended period.

The forthcoming meeting is expected to delve into the intricate details of the repatriation plan, encompassing aspects such as the timeline, logistical considerations, and the support that will be extended to Afghan nationals returning to their homeland. The Interior Ministry will play a central role in formulating recommendations, which will then be presented to the federal cabinet for formal approval.

Pakistani authorities have made it clear that Afghan refugees possessing PoR cards need not be concerned, as their safety will be ensured, and their rights will be protected.

This progressive move underscores Pakistan’s adherence to humanitarian principles while simultaneously addressing its security concerns regarding undocumented Afghan nationals.

Sources indicate that the meeting represents a pivotal stride toward discovering a balanced and sustainable resolution to the Afghan refugee crisis in Pakistan. It reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to collaborate with international partners and the Afghan government to facilitate a safe and dignified return for those who choose to do so.
