PM Orders to formulate proposals to cut government expenditures

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to formulate proposals aimed at reducing government expenditures and revamping Pakistan’s economic structure. In a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister House, PM Shehbaz stressed the urgent need for complete digitization and automation of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), signaling a commitment to transparency and efficiency in tax collection.

After discussion on government expenditures, Championing the adoption of the world’s best practices in FBR digitization, PM Shehbaz highlighted the objectives of enhancing tax collection, curbing evasion, corruption, and smuggling while ensuring convenience for the public and business community. He pledged to reward excellence among FBR officers while swiftly addressing any misconduct.

FBR Chairman Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana presented efforts to bolster tax collection, expand the taxpayer base, and improve service delivery. Dissatisfied with the progress, PM Shehbaz urged immediate action to meet international standards in FBR digitization, emphasizing the need to learn from past mistakes and tackle the country’s economic challenges head-on.

PM Shehbaz also announced measures to incentivize efficiency and professionalism within FBR and vowed support from the Ministry of Interior and Pakistan Army to combat smuggling. Acknowledging the contributions of former caretaker finance minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar and her team, PM Shehbaz praised their efforts in fortifying Pakistan’s economic foundation.

With a target to bring 1.5 million more taxpayers into the fold this fiscal year and legislation underway for digitizing invoicing, PM Shehbaz underscored the importance of immediate implementation. The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials including Senator Musadik Malik and Governor State Bank of Pakistan, reflects the government’s commitment to driving economic reform and prosperity in Pakistan.
