Punjab announces summer vacations for schools

The Punjab government has declared the commencement of annual summer vacations for both public and private schools across the province. The decision comes amidst forecasts of soaring temperatures, prompting concerns for the well-being of students and staff.

According to the official notification released on Friday, the summer break will extend from June 1 to August 14, allowing students and educators a respite from the sweltering heat expected to engulf the region.

In addition to the extended vacations, the Punjab government has also implemented revised school timings to mitigate the impact of the intense heatwave. Effective immediately, schools will operate from 7:00 am to 11:30 am from Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, the timing will be adjusted to 7:00 am to 10:30 am.

The decision about summer vacations comes in response to warnings issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) regarding the imminent heatwave conditions anticipated to prevail over Punjab and Sindh. The PMD has cautioned that high-pressure systems in the upper atmosphere are likely to intensify temperatures across the country, with heatwave conditions expected to peak from May 23 to 27.

During this period, day temperatures are projected to soar 4 to 6°C above normal levels from May 21 to 23, escalating further to 6 to 8°C above average from May 23 to 27. The severity of the conditions necessitates proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students and educators alike.
