Putin meets Iranian FM, backs peace efforts amid tensions

Russia reaffirms support for Iran, offers mediation role in Middle East crisis

MOSCOW: Vladimir Putin held talks with Abbas Araghchi in St Petersburg on Monday, expressing hope that Iran would overcome the current challenges and that peace would soon prevail in the region.

During the meeting, Putin said Russia would continue efforts to support Iran and promote stability in the Middle East, offering to mediate in the ongoing tensions following US and Israeli strikes.

“For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the peoples of the region to ensure that peace is achieved as quickly as possible,” Putin said, according to Russian state media.

The Russian president also referred to a recent message from Iran’s Supreme Leader and reiterated Moscow’s commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Iran.

Russia has previously proposed storing Iran’s enriched uranium as part of efforts to reduce tensions, though the United States has not accepted the offer.

Araghchi, in response, thanked Russia for its continued support and said ties between the two countries would further deepen.

The two nations have expanded cooperation in recent years, including a long-term strategic partnership agreement and collaboration on nuclear energy projects such as the Bushehr power plant.
