IWPG holds peace art competition for refugee and hearing-impaired children in Egypt

Inclusive programme in Alexandria and Cairo promotes peace, cultural understanding and environmental awareness through art

CAIRO: The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Global Region 2 organised the Egypt preliminary round of the 8th International Loving-Peace Art Competition in Alexandria and Cairo during June, bringing together refugee children and children with hearing impairments in an inclusive peace education programme.

The competition, led by IWPG Global Region 2 Director Seo Yeon Lee, was held on June 6, 10 and 15 in collaboration with the Women of Peace Initiative and local partners, including the Arab Association for the Deaf, the Beit El Agamy Refugee Initiative and the Ahlam Stable Antar Foundation.

In Alexandria, refugee and migrant children from Yemen, Sudan and Syria expressed themes of peace, hope and friendship through their artwork. The event brought together children from diverse cultural backgrounds, encouraging interaction and mutual understanding through creative expression.

In Cairo, children with hearing impairments created artwork depicting their vision of peace and coexistence. Participants also explained the meaning behind their drawings using sign language, promoting inclusive communication throughout the programme.

At the Ahlam Stable Antar Foundation, children participated in a range of activities under the theme “My Peace Story.” Alongside painting, they took part in carpet weaving, leather crafting, candle making, recycling projects, computer education and cooking classes.

After completing their artwork, participants shared their drawings, made new friends and learned about different cultures.

The programme also featured a peace planter-making activity, allowing children to learn about environmental stewardship and sustainability while reflecting on the importance of peaceful coexistence between people and nature.

Organisers said the initiative created an inclusive environment where children could participate regardless of disability, nationality or language by combining art, sign language and environmental education.

IWPG Global Region 2 said it plans to further strengthen cooperation with local organisations in Egypt and continue expanding peace education and cultural programmes for children and young people.
