Punjab CM honoured in Oman for housing initiative aimed at providing affordable homes to low-income families

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been honoured with the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in Oman for the province’s Apni Chhat Apna Ghar housing initiative.

The Punjab government formally launched the programme on August 21, 2024, with the objective of providing affordable houses and apartments to eligible residents across the province over a period of four and a half years.

The initiative has received international recognition for its efforts to help low-income families, particularly those living in rented accommodation or informal settlements, obtain their own homes.

Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the award as a “historic” and proud moment for Punjab and Pakistan, saying the recognition reflected the chief minister’s vision and commitment to providing families with secure homes, dignity and hope.

According to Aurangzeb, more than 200,000 homes have already been delivered across Punjab through the programme, which she said was changing lives and creating greater security and opportunities for future generations.

“As a proud daughter of Punjab, I feel immense pride seeing the vision of our CM recognised on the world stage,” she said.

Punjab Education Minister Sikandar Hayat also expressed pride over the recognition and praised Housing Minister Bilal Yaseen for his role in implementing the chief minister’s housing initiative.

He said the award acknowledged the hard work, commitment and determination behind the programme.

The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme is aimed at facilitating low-income residents who are currently living in rented homes or informal settlements by helping them acquire housing of their own.
