Lahore: Maryam Nawaz made history on Monday as she took the oath of office, becoming Punjab’s first female chief minister. The inauguration ceremony, held at Punjab Governor House, was attended by over 1,000 guests, including diplomats, celebrities, and political leaders.
Governor Baligh Ur Rehman administered the oath to Maryam Nawaz amid a boycott by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) members. Maryam secured 220 votes in the provincial assembly, defeating her opponent, Rana Aftab Ahmad, who received no votes due to the SIC’s boycott.
In her maiden speech, Punjab’s First Female Chief Minister Maryam extended an olive branch to the opposition and expressed gratitude to her party members and allied parties for their support. She emphasized the significance of her appointment for women across Pakistan and pledged to serve all constituencies regardless of political affiliation.

Reflecting on her journey, Maryam expressed gratitude to her late mother and credited senior PML-N leaders, including Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif, as her mentors. She vowed to uphold the responsibilities of her new role and work towards resolving the issues facing Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Pakistani politics, ushering in a new era of female leadership in the province.
