Pakistan Congratulates Donald Trump on Second Term as U.S. President

Pakistan’s top leadership has extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on assuming his second term as the 47th President of the United States, expressing optimism about strengthening bilateral ties under the renewed U.S. administration.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, marked a historic moment as Trump became the first U.S. president since the 19th century to win a second term after previously losing the White House. Several prominent global figures attended the event, where the 78-year-old took the oath of office alongside Vice President JD Vance.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his congratulations through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My warmest congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his assumption of office as the forty-seventh President of the United States of America. I look forward to working with him to strengthen the enduring Pakistan-US partnership.”

He added, “Over the years, our two great countries have worked together closely to pursue peace and prosperity in the region and beyond for our peoples, and we shall continue to do so in the future. My best wishes to President Trump for a successful second term in office.”

President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his congratulations, with the PPP media cell quoting him as expressing well wishes for Trump’s presidency.

Global leaders have begun to react to Trump’s inauguration. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the historic partnership between the UK and the U.S., noting, “Together, we have defended the world from tyranny and worked towards our mutual security and prosperity. With President Trump’s longstanding affection and historical ties to the United Kingdom, I know that depth of friendship will continue.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared her well wishes, stating, “Best wishes President @realDonaldTrump […] for your tenure as 47th President of the United States. The EU looks forward to working closely with you to tackle global challenges. Together, our societies can achieve greater prosperity and strengthen their common security.”

In Pakistan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif praised Trump’s inaugural address during an appearance on Geo News’ “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath,” describing it as “constructive” and highlighting Trump’s commitment to playing a peacemaking role. “This is a very commendable development that he spoke about playing a role as peacemaker,” Asif said.

He expressed hope that Trump’s renewed presidency would see the U.S. take on a more unifying global role. Asif also addressed concerns about potential U.S. pressure regarding the imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, assuring that Pakistan is well-prepared to handle any such situations diplomatically.

“Our foreign policy is balanced, and we maintain strong ties with China, Russia, Central Asia, Iran, and other countries. We have a robust diplomatic presence in Washington and are confident in managing any challenges,” he stated.
