The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a heatwave alert, warning that moderate to severe heatwave conditions are expected across most parts of the country during the Eid ul Adha holidays from May 25 to May 31.
According to the Met Office, a high-pressure system is likely to develop in the upper atmosphere on May 25 and strengthen further from May 26, leading to a significant rise in temperatures nationwide.
The department said maximum temperatures could remain 5°C to 7°C above normal in several regions, with mercury expected to rise to 42°C to 45°C in areas including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad and other cities across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In northern and hilly regions such as Malakand, Hazara Division, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir areas including Neelum Valley and Rawalakot, temperatures are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal, reaching 38°C to 40°C.
The PMD further warned that extreme heat conditions, with temperatures ranging from 47°C to 50°C, are likely in several southern and central districts including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and surrounding areas.
Karachi is also expected to experience very hot weather during the forecast period, with maximum temperatures likely to remain between 35°C and 38°C.
The Met Office said night temperatures will also remain higher than usual, adding to overall heat stress conditions across the country.
Citizens have been advised to take precautionary measures, especially children, women and the elderly, and avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight between 10am and 4pm. The public has also been urged to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
Farmers have been advised to adjust agricultural activities according to weather conditions and ensure proper care of livestock to prevent heat-related stress.
The PMD also warned that electricity demand and water consumption are likely to increase sharply during the heatwave period, urging the public to use resources judiciously.
Authorities across the country have been advised to remain alert and take necessary preventive measures to avoid any heat-related emergencies during the forecast period.
