ISLAMABAD: Rain-wind/thundershowers are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Punjab, the Pothohar region, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir on Thursday, with isolated heavy rainfall likely during the evening and night, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.
The weather forecast comes as Islamabad and Rawalpindi experienced intermittent rain for a second consecutive day, with Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) teams deployed in low-lying areas to deal with accumulated rainwater.
However, rainwater could not be drained from Jamia Girls Higher Secondary School in Rawalpindi, creating difficulties for students and disrupting teaching activities.
Meanwhile, the body of a girl who drowned in a Rawalpindi stormwater drain on Monday was recovered. Rescue officials said her dupatta and slippers were found near Gulberg Green, while CCTV footage of the incident also emerged.
Urban flooding warning
The PMD warned that heavy rainfall during the nights of September 3 and 4 could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot.
Heavy rainfall may also trigger flash flooding in local streams and nullahs of Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad-Rawalpindi and the Pothohar region.
The department also warned of landslides in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.
Hot and humid weather is expected to prevail in most other plain areas of the country.
Rain forecast for Islamabad, Punjab
In Islamabad and adjoining areas, partly cloudy weather with rain-wind/thundershowers is expected, with isolated heavy rainfall likely during the night.
In Punjab, hot and humid weather will prevail in most districts. However, rain-wind/thundershowers are expected in Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Narowal, Sialkot, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat and adjoining areas.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also possible during the night, according to the PMD.
Upper KP to receive rain
Rain-wind/thundershowers are expected in Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Battagram, Buner, Nowshera, Peshawar, Swabi, Mardan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Malakand, Mohmand, Khyber, Bajaur, Kohat, Parachinar and adjoining areas.
The PMD said isolated heavy rainfall was likely during the evening and night.
Weather in Sindh, Balochistan
Sindh is expected to remain hot and humid, while partly cloudy conditions with chances of drizzle are forecast in coastal areas, including Karachi.
Balochistan will also remain hot and humid in most districts, with partly cloudy conditions expected in coastal areas.
In Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, partly cloudy weather with rain-wind/thundershowers is expected, while isolated heavy rainfall may occur in Kashmir.
Rainfall recorded in twin cities
According to the PMD, rain-wind/thundershowers occurred in Islamabad, the Pothohar region, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during the past 24 hours, with heavy rainfall recorded at isolated places.
Saidpur received the highest rainfall in Islamabad at 45mm, followed by Islamabad City with 28mm and the Airport with 12mm.
Saidu Sharif received 35mm, while Rawalpindi’s New Kattarian recorded 13mm and Shamsabad 12mm.
The highest maximum temperature of 43°C was recorded at Dalbandin and Nokkundi, while Sibi, Bhakkar and Dadu recorded 41°C.
Temperatures recorded
Islamabad recorded a minimum of 21°C and maximum of 33°C, Lahore 27-36°C, Karachi 26-33°C, Peshawar 25-35°C, Quetta 20-37°C, Gilgit 19-33°C, Muzaffarabad 22-36°C and Skardu 15-26°C.
Murree recorded 14-23°C, Faisalabad 28-39°C and Multan 27-38°C.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert and take precautions as heavy rainfall could cause urban and flash flooding in several parts of the country.
