LAHORE: Two policemen were martyred and three others injured when suspects opened indiscriminate fire on a police team during a raid to arrest a proclaimed offender in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area, police said.
The incident took place at Peshay Khan Chowk within the jurisdiction of Larri Adda Police Station, where a police team had gone to arrest a proclaimed offender.
According to police, the suspects opened fire on the personnel during the raid, resulting in the deaths of Sub-Inspector Adeel Ashiq and Head Constable Asad, both posted at Larri Adda police station. Three other policemen sustained injuries in the attack.
The attackers fled the scene after the shooting. A heavy contingent of police reached the area and cordoned it off, while search operations were launched to trace the suspects.
Police teams also began collecting evidence from the crime scene as part of the investigation into the attack.
Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim took notice of the incident and sought a report from Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Operations). He directed officers to use all available resources to ensure the immediate arrest of those involved.
The provincial police chief paid tribute to the martyred personnel and expressed solidarity with their families, saying the welfare and complete care of the families of police personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty remained a priority for Punjab Police.
Speaking to the media, Lahore DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said the prime suspect had been identified as Rehan Butt, while efforts were continuing to identify the other suspects involved in the firing.
