Steven Smith’s half-century, disciplined bowling steer Sultans to victory in Karachi

Multan Sultans defeated Rawalpindiz by six wickets in the 31st match of Pakistan Super League season 11 at the National Bank Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a 166-run target, the 2021 champions reached the total with four wickets down and eight balls to spare.

The Sultans had a modest start as opener Sahibzada Farhan was dismissed for 20 in the fourth over with 29 runs on the board.

Steven Smith then shifted momentum with an aggressive knock, forming a 69-run partnership with Josh Philippe for the second wicket before both fell in quick succession.

Smith top-scored with a brisk 56 off 31 balls, including five fours and three sixes, while Philippe contributed 17 off 19 deliveries.

With 66 runs required off 51 balls, skipper Ashton Turner joined vice-captain Shan Masood, and the pair added a crucial 57-run partnership to steady the chase.

Razaullah broke the stand by dismissing Masood for 20 in the penultimate over. Turner remained unbeaten on 37 off 21 balls, guiding his side to victory alongside Arafat Minhas, who scored seven not out.

For Rawalpindiz, Asif Afridi was the standout bowler with figures of 2/28, while Razaullah and Saad Masood picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, Rawalpindiz posted 166/6 after opting to bat first, recovering from an early collapse. Shahzaib Khan (0) and Yasir Khan (4) were dismissed inside two overs, leaving the team struggling at 6/2.

A 63-run partnership between Mitchell and captain Mohammad Rizwan helped stabilise the innings before the latter was dismissed for 26.

Mitchell then added 52 runs with Sam Billings, who scored 29 off 20 balls. Later, Dian Forrester provided late acceleration with a quickfire 37 off 15 deliveries.

Mitchell remained unbeaten on 58 off 46 balls, anchoring the innings.

For the Sultans, Mohammad Imran, Peter Siddle, Mohammad Wasim Jr, and Arafat Minhas claimed one wicket each.
